Appointments can either be booked up to two weeks in advance (non-urgent or review appointments) or booked on the day (acute or urgent problems).

Out of Hours
If you require urgent attention or advice, telephone 0300 111 0 111. If possible, have a pen and paper handy. Out of hours provision is provided by County Durham PCT.

Nurses

The practice nurses help with dressings, removal of sutures, ear syringing, minor injuries, injections, family planning including coil fitting and implants, cervical smears, health advice (including travel advice) and preventative medicine. All our practice nurses have had specialist training and are available to advise on most aspects of health care, including chronic disease management.

Healthcare Assistants

The health care assistants help with blood tests, blood pressure monitoring, new patient medicals, some categories of diabetic foot checks, healthy living advice and provide assistance to the doctors and nurses.

The practice manager is responsible for the overall smooth running and organisation of the practice and would welcome any constructive comments from the patients

Administration

Two secretaries, Joanne Turner and Paula Gartland deal with all practice administration work including hospital referrals. If you find you need to cancel/rearrange a hospital appointment please contact the hospital, not the practice secretaries.

Reception

Our receptionists are fully trained and do a difficult job well. Please remember if you are sometimes kept waiting or if questions seem irritating, the receptionist is only carrying out our policies which are aimed at smooth and efficient running of the practice. This is especially relevant when a home visit is being requested and the receptionist has to judge the urgency of your request. Please notify changes of address or personal details as soon as possible. In an emergency this can be vital.

Community Nurses

District nurses and community midwives are attached to the practice. They work closely with all the doctors. They can be contacted if necessary by telephoning the practice.

Health Visitors

Two health visitors are attached to the practice. They can be contacted by telephoning 0191 382 6882 or 0191 382 6884.

Attached Staff

Dietitian
The practice dietitian is available to see patients who are over-weight, under-weight, have raised cholesterol or who have dietary problems. The dietitian is always in attendance at the Diabetic Clinic. Please note referral to the dietitian is via a doctor.

Physiotherapy
Initial referral to the physiotherapy department is via a doctor. Where treatment is likely to be relatively long term the physiotherapy will refer patients to The University Hospital of North Durham Physiotherapy Department.
